Trunking Systems

Trunking systems are modular lighting solutions that create continuous lighting lines using LED modules installed on an electrified modular trunking channel with a plug-and-play mechanism. They have a wide range of applications, from industrial facilities and modern offices to luxury retail stores and architectural spaces, offering advantages such as rapid modular installation, flexible configuration, and long-term expandability.

What Are Trunking Systems?

A trunking system consists of three main components: an electrified modular trunking channel, LED modules mounted onto the channel, and accessory modules (PIR sensors, daylight sensors, emergency lighting units, and power sockets). Multiple trunking sections are connected end-to-end to create a continuous lighting line, while LED and accessory modules can be installed at any desired point along the channel within minutes.

Types of Trunking Systems

  • Single-circuit system: One electrical circuit controls all modules simultaneously. Suitable for small and medium-sized commercial spaces.
  • Three-circuit system: Modules grouped on separate circuits can be controlled independently. Suitable for shopping malls, large retail stores, and industrial facilities.
  • 48V magnetic system: Slim-profile, concealed-connection systems prioritizing architectural aesthetics. Suitable for luxury retail and premium office projects.

Applications

  • Industrial facilities and warehouses: High lumen output, uniform light distribution, and 40-50% energy savings through PIR sensor integration
  • Modern offices: UGR ≤ 19 modules with microprismatic diffusers and DALI-2 lighting scenarios
  • Retail stores: Combination of architectural ceiling lines and product accent lighting
  • Shopping mall corridors: Uniform horizontal illumination with seasonal colour module options
  • Workshops and production lines: Task-oriented lighting with modular expandability

Advantages of Trunking Systems

Rapid Modular Installation

In a 1,000-metre warehouse project, a conventional lighting system may require approximately 800 labour hours, while a trunking system can be completed within 250-300 hours, providing approximately 60-70% labour savings.

Flexible Configuration

Different wattage LED modules, various optical distributions, sensors, and emergency lighting modules can all be installed on the same trunking channel.

Expandability

As new requirements arise, additional modules can be integrated into the existing system without replacing the entire installation.

Smart Control

DALI-2 compatible trunking modules can be integrated into smart building automation systems through hourly dimming profiles, PIR and daylight sensor integration, and BMS connectivity. Total energy savings can reach 60-75% compared to conventional lighting systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a trunking system and a row of individual luminaires?

Individual luminaires are installed with separate connections and typically have gaps between them. Trunking modules are connected through a continuous trunking channel, creating an uninterrupted lighting line. Trunking systems offer advantages in both installation time and architectural aesthetics.

Can I convert my existing linear luminaire system to a trunking system?

In most cases, existing luminaire rows can be replaced with a trunking system. The old ballasts are completely removed, and the new trunking channel is connected directly to the electrical supply line. A typical refurbishment project can be completed within 3-5 days.

Can I use modules with different colour temperatures on the same trunking channel?

Yes. If different areas within the same project require different colour temperatures (for example, 4000K in the main working area and 3000K in the relaxation area), different modules can be installed on different sections of the same trunking channel. These modules can be controlled independently via DALI.

Why is a 48V magnetic system more expensive than a standard 220V system?

It incorporates a dedicated low-voltage driver, magnetic mounting mechanism, and slim-profile design. It is typically 40-60% more expensive than standard systems and is generally preferred for architectural projects where aesthetics are a priority, such as boutique retail stores and luxury residential developments.
