Canopy Luminaires

Canopy luminaires are specialized lighting fixtures designed for semi-open spaces that serve as a transition between outdoor and indoor environments. They are commonly used in petrol station canopies, fast-food drive-thru lanes, car park entrances, and covered exterior ceiling areas. With IP65/IP66 protection against moisture and dust, high lumen output, and compact recessed designs, they provide a professional lighting solution.

Reference values: 4000K-5000K colour temperature · 6,000-15,000 lumens · CRI ≥ 80 · IP65/IP66 · IK08-IK10

What Are Canopy Luminaires?

Canopy luminaires are surface-mounted or recessed LED luminaires installed beneath ceilings that are exposed to outdoor conditions but protected from direct rainfall. They are commonly used in petrol station canopies, open-air shopping centre car parks, hotel entrances, and similar applications. Typical petrol station canopies range from 8 to 16 metres in height; therefore, luminaires must combine high lumen output with IP65 protection and IK08+ impact resistance.

Applications

  • Petrol station canopies: 100-150W, IP65/IP66, 5000K white, uniform light distribution
  • Fast-food drive-thru lanes: 50-100W, 4000K neutral white for customer comfort
  • Car park entrances and ramps: Asymmetric optics for improved driver comfort
  • Open-air shopping centre car parks: General canopy lighting applications
  • Hotel and restaurant entrance canopies: Inviting 3000K-3500K warm white, dimmable
  • Industrial shelters: Loading bays and warehouse entrances

Types of Canopy Luminaires

Recessed Canopy Luminaire

Installed within the ceiling structure, leaving only the light-emitting surface visible. Preferred for modern minimalist architecture. Standard solution for metal petrol station canopies.

Surface-Mounted Canopy Luminaire

Mounted directly onto the ceiling surface. Suitable for timber soffits, concrete canopies, or structures where recessed installation is not possible.

High-Lumen Industrial Canopy Luminaire

Delivering 10,000+ lumens for large-area coverage. Designed for petrol stations and large car park canopies.

Technical Criteria

IP and IK Protection

IP65 is the minimum requirement for resistance against rain and moisture ingress; IP66 is recommended for pressure-wash environments and coastal locations. IK08-IK10 impact resistance provides protection against vandalism and accidental impacts.

Driver Quality

Surge protection ≥ 10kV (particularly critical for petrol station applications), flicker-free operation, operating temperature range from -30°C to +50°C, and efficiency above 95%.

Optical Distribution

Wide-beam optics (110°+) provide uniform horizontal illumination beneath the canopy. Asymmetric versions help prevent unnecessary light spill into adjacent areas.

Petrol Station Standards

Petrol station canopy applications may require specific certifications:

  • EN 60079 (explosive atmospheres) — for environments where fuel vapours may be present
  • UV/IR emission control — to prevent interaction with fuel vapour components
  • Anti-static housing — to prevent static electricity accumulation
  • Lightning protection — essential for open outdoor environments

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ATEX-certified luminaires required for petrol stations?

Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous area classifications may apply around fuel dispensing points; in these zones, ATEX-certified luminaires are mandatory. The canopy ceiling itself is generally located outside Zone 2 classifications; however, verification by an authorized engineer in accordance with local regulations is strongly recommended.

How does canopy height affect luminaire selection?

5-7 metres: 60-100W 7-10 metres: 100-150W 10-15 metres: 150-200W For certain industrial canopy applications, high-bay luminaires may also be used at greater mounting heights.

Does it make sense to replace existing mercury vapour or high-pressure sodium luminaires with LED canopy luminaires?

Absolutely. A 250-400W metal halide luminaire can typically be replaced by a 100-150W LED canopy luminaire. Benefits include 60-65% energy savings, instant full light output (particularly advantageous in cold environments), and a lifetime that is 4-5 times longer. The typical payback period is between 18 and 24 months.

Do motion sensor canopy luminaires make sense?

For petrol station applications, continuous high illuminance levels are generally recommended for safety reasons. However, in drive-thru lanes and private car parks, sensor-equipped luminaires operating at 30% output during unoccupied periods and increasing to 100% when motion is detected can provide energy savings exceeding 50%.
